Last night, being bored, I wrote details of my own dream house:

Contemporary. Spacious. Natural light everywhere. Overlooking a sea from the cliff. The beach end of the house faces west. Secluded. The house is for one occupant, two-three maximum.

Private beach below. Wooden stairs lead down from the cliff to the boardwalk that connects to the jetty, where my yacht moors. Boat shack containing canoes and kayaks. Sea glass in abundance.

Three story, with greenhouse and observatory on the roof. Master bedroom will be in a indoor atrium, which is from the second floor to the third floor. Inclosed by floor to ceiling glass window that commands the view of the beach.

Third floor: Library, with the staircase leading to the roof. It has rare collections of art books, novels, art, science and National Geographic magazines, and a section devoted to comic books, mangas and animes.

Second floor: bedroom, art studio, mini bar, private gallery. The bedroom and the art studio connects openly, with glass ceiling above. Contemporary wooden staircase leads from art studio to the balcony of the third floor library.

Lavatory next to bathroom, shares the view of the beach. Toilet bowl should be facing the view, so while I’m defecating I’ll have something beautiful to look at (like sunset, the blue horizon or stars at night).

First floor: Bathroom, living room, billiard room, game room, PC room, kitchen, dining area, guest bedroom. The garage connects to dining area.

The front door and the garage door leads into the walled courtyard, with heavily secured parameter: security camera, guard station, sensory detecter, and iron gate.

The courtyard contains a rock garden, and a zen-like fountain. Gravel car road leads from the garage through the iron gate.

Ground area: Sauna, connected to the house. Biking and hiking trail that leads into wildlife area. Marsh not far, with a boat shack that contains kayaks.

The platform juts out from the base of the second floor, over the cliff. The library on the third floor overlooks it through the glass. The master bedroom area is behind the platform, separated by the glass sliding doors. The platform is long and wide enough to have a outdoor pool, an equipment shack (which is against the house), and a fire pit.

I would like the area to be attractive and peaceful to myself other people and also to wildlife in general. The area I have in mind already has ferns, arum lillies and iris. I have a vision of pebbles and just a little water but not with fountains or waterfalls. Something that is cost conscious would be great! The area is about 2m x 3m with the plants mentioned already positioned around the edge. Any ideas anyone how to tackle this?

Thanks for any help offered.

What resources are there to making your own garden – I also thought about putting in a pond… (also there are only rocks in the backyard now)

thanks!!
what is the exposure of your back yard? We have 1 large tree over the area I would put her space – it is in the corner of the yard with a wooden fence on each side.

do you have any shade trees? one

and what climate zone do you live in? We are in Northern California

Does your mom enjoy gardening, or is this just to be a place for her to sit and enjoy? Since she is disabled and she has never done gardening – this will just be a pretty place she can sit outside and enjoy.

I hope this helps more!

Thanks!!
oh – and they are small gray gravel rocks

Garden fountains are accessories to water ponds – be they small or large. The sound of flowing water, be it rippling or cascading are so relaxing that they add up to the peacefulness and tranquility of outdoors.

There are so many fountains to choose from. You can go for the dramatic fountains that are made out of cast stone. You can save space by going for wall fountains. There are so many finishing to select. There is the garden wall fountains that are appropriate for both indoor and outdoor use. There are sandstone finishes that add classy appeal.

Other factors we suggest you consider before deciding on the ideal fountain for you is your living space situation. Is your garden big enough to accommodate the outdoor fountains made out of copper, stone, and fiberglass? These fountains are normally so large that those who have big gardens consider these to be the center of their exterior.

Another factor that determines the kind of water garden fountain you purchase is if you have pets. If the fountain you get is on ground level, then your pet may think that it is a bathtub, or better yet for him, a swimming pool. Sometimes, they will even drink from it.

For others, water fountains, from the looks of it, may be daunting. You do not have to go to the mall yourself and check how much they are. Obviously, these are expensive. You have a water garden and you are already satisfied with a water feature that is appropriate for the landscape. A small water fountain can do the trick. It is not only cheap, it is also low-maintenance. As long as you hear the ripping of the water, your nerves will be relaxed. Why need a big fountain, right?

So you decided to build your own water garden fountain. Here are the steps:

1. Consult an electrician who could install the ground fault circuit interrupter near the man-made pond. The cord length depends on how far the fountain is from the pond. Ideally, the landscaping for the garden fountain is inches close to the patio so that while you are relaxing on the patio, you are soothed with the sounds coming from your fountain.

2. Remove the weeds that are surrounding the are you chose to put your water fountain. Double check whether the ground is level. Then that is when you dig the hole. This is where you will put the pond liner. In order for you to get the accurate dimensions of the hole, trace the preformed pond lining plastic and trace around the area.

3. Make sure that your hole is deep enough to accommodate the water garden fountain that you have in mind. Use sand to fill between the gaps. Sand can be used at the bottom because it is malleable and will let you have an easier time adjusting the height of the pond for your water garden fountain.

4. Before instilling the water garden fountain, check whether the ground is level, front and back, right and left.

5. Now you’re ready to put your water garden fountain. If your main concentration on having a fountain is the decoration, then you should build a fountain that is cheap enough for you to go about the total costs. Make sure that you will be able to save more having done the job yourself than buying one and having technicians to install It for you in the first place.

6. This can be done sans plumbing, as a matter of fact. You can just drill holes in the bottom of your ’statue’ and then another one on the top. With a knife, you can make the holes bigger so it would allow the plastic tubing to pass through easily.

7. Discharge the adapter of your pump by half an inch. This is where the water pushes out. Now that the plastic tubing has been fed through your statue, you can bring it over the man-made pond.

8. Fill the pond with water by putting the pump into the water, Let the tubing be submerge but at the same time, make sure that it remains hanging by the bottom of the statue. Double check that it is the right fit above the pump’s adaptor.

9. Plug the pump into the outlet and watch the jet of water shoot out of the statue. You will enjoy it more because your very own hands are responsible for this project.

A wall fountain adds beauty and relaxing ambiance to any place. The sound of steady cascading water is very relaxing. Installing one does not require so much work but you must assess how the different components fit together before the construction begins.

The tools needed are: a drill, screws, screw driver, tubing, strings and the Fountain (Note: this construction is not for a mirror or glass wall fountain)

The main components are: a mask, a basin with a built-in pump, and a decorative device or rosette. The fountain works as follows.

1.) Initially the water is in the basin and it is pumped into the mask.

2.) The water passes through the rosette or any spout in front of the mask as a tiny stream into the basin or series of basins and goes back to the basin where the pump is.

3.) The pump in the basin pumps the water back into the mask and the cycle is repeated.

Once the place where the wall fountain would stand out had been chosen, try to figure out the ways in which the plumbing and electric wires would not show off. This is necessary if the basin is a separate part from the fountain. If there is no access to the back of the wall the best alternative is to run the plumbing and electric wires up the inside of the wall.

In the case of a brick wall or concrete, make a cavity by removing some bricks or concrete from the wall making a room for the tube. The height of this cavity must be from the bottom of the basin to the overflow of the mask. A larger tube must be used to fit-in a smaller tube for the circulating water.

Again another cavity is needed for a tube where electric wires would run. Restore the wall to its former look as much as possible. It would not be appropriate if you have constructed a wall fountain nicely but have made the wall behind it ugly.

The task would be easier if the wall is accessible at the back and you can follow these steps.

1.) Drill a 1st hole through the wall at the position of the mask.

2.) Drill a 2nd hole at the bottom behind the position of the basin.

3.) Staying in front of the wall drop a string through the 1st hole to the back of the wall, and pull it toward the front wall passing through the 2nd hole at the bottom.

4.) Tie a string to a tube of an appropriate size.

5.) Now go to the back of the wall, pull the string up through the 1st hole returning the string to the front passing through the 2nd hole at the bottom.

6.) Enough tubing for the outflow (mask, rosette or spout) must be taken into consideration. Cut the excess after the exact length is achieved.

7.) Drill a hole for the electric wires just enough for the plug to go through it. It will be no sweat to let it through the wall to be plugged to an outlet.

8.) After the holes and tubing have been set, it?s now time to connect the water tubing to the pump in the basin.

9.) When you hang the wall fountain on the wall, see to it that the hardware used is strong enough to support 50 lbs. weight.

10.) All you need is to supply the water, plug it in and you have a running Wall Fountain!

Make sure that too much water isn?t? going out of the basin because of splashing. The overflow must be close enough to the basin to prevent water from draining. This may cause damage to the pump. Use the flow adjustment feature of the pump to regulate the flow of water in your wall fountain.

Regular cleaning is always a must to extend the life of the pump. Changing water regularly would prevent dirt and bacteria build-up.

Building wall fountains on your own is not as daunting a task as you may think. However, it is not a cheap undertaking because the materials are expensive. The main components you will need are a wall of some kind to which you attach the fountain, a pump, pipe or tubing and a basin to serve as a pool to hold the water. The pipe and pump have to be hidden in some way, either within a figurine or encased in the masonry units by means of a narrow opening in the mortar or grout.

You will need to have electricity connected to wall fountains in order for the pump to operate. If you have this electrical switch located indoors (which is the preferred location) you can turn on and off the fountains easily without having to go outdoors.

This switch also controls the flow of water. The garden wall fountain (http://www.garden-fountains.com/Categories.bok?category=Wall+Fountains) will usually have a gate or a three-way valve that permits you to make adjustments to this flow of water. If you would like to have water coming into the fountain in order to keep the levels up after some of the water evaporates, you will need to hook a float valve to the water supply connected to the fountain.

The most important part of building your own wall fountains is the construction of the holding pool. Concrete or concrete block are the two commonly used materials for this purpose. Then you can easily cover this with plaster or decorative tile or stone above the water level. The inside should be lined with a flexible liner to prevent the water from leaking out.

Even if you decide that building a wall water fountain (http://www.garden-fountains.com/florentine-fountains/the-wall-fountains-of-florentine-sculptors-home.htm) is too challenging and time consuming for you to take on by yourself, you can get help from professionals in all aspects of project. Plumbers will easily be able to connect the pump and the hoses for you after you have the pool in place and electricians can make sure the electrical connections are safe. The cost of hiring such professionals is not cheap, but if you have friends in this trade you may be able to get the work done for next to nothing.

If you decide to buy one of the ready made wall fountains that you see at home improvement or garden centers or that you have looked online, you will still have to do some work in order to get the fountain working. The directions will tell you that all you have to do is hang the fountain on a wall and add the plumbing, pipe and basin. Routing the pipe is a difficult task and is a lot easier if you can incorporate the plumbing into the wall itself.

If there is nothing behind the wall, such as a neighbor`s yard or if you have built the wall just for the fountain, you can drill a hole through the wall to accommodate the pipes. If not, then you have to find a way of concealing these pipes so that they cannot be seen and this makes the fountain look as if it is part of the setting. The water will seem to come from a hidden spring and spout out through the fountainhead or whatever way you wish it to come out and then falls to the pool.
